Birdie

Feathers and flesh tremble and unfold in a cotton-wool silence. Bodies are flushed by their own nakedness as the living are slowly plucked, bringing them closer to death. Birdie diptychs plunge the viewer into the space of "ma", this in-between that for the Japanese connects things and gives each a meaning. Here, a wing beat brings together in one breath epidermis and taxidermy in this way allowing a space that fuses life and death. The tremulous intimacy of flesh is revealed in all its naked rawness when death dresses up in blazingly colourful plumage, recalling the echo of a tribal dance. The sexualised character of the images reveals a feminine sensibility that modestly embraces this little death and invites us to caress it gently, rather than stare at it voyeuristically.
